Each year, there are more people in Midland County who are in need. One way that your United Way of Midland County reaches out to those who are most vulnerable in our community is through the “First Call for Help” program.
A confidential information and referral service, First Call for Help serves as a one-stop resource for people who need help, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Through First Call for Help specialists, along with after-hours phone support by Community Mental Health, people are given access to local resources. As a community resource clearing-house, we strive to reduce redundancy, frustration and increase access to services. Specialists also guide callers through identifying and prioritizing their needs.
In 2007 alone, 7,769 calls for assistance were received though First Call for Help, an increase of 19% over 2006. Requests for food, shelter and clothing made up 67% of the calls received through First Call for Help. Those asking for help with utility costs, including heat and electric rose 59% during 2007 as well.
